Fieldwork Assignment- Classroom Management
For this assignment, we were tasked with going into a classroom and take note on the classroom environment and the behavior management that the teacher uses. We then tied it back to the learning we have done throughout the entire Classroom Management course. In doing this, I was able to think about how I want to run my future classroom and see the real world application that the learning I had been doing in class has to an elementary school classroom. We were asked to reflect on the approach the teacher uses to behavior, the organizational structure of academics and behavior management, how the teacher explained her expectations and more. This artifact connects directly to Standard #9 of the Common Core Teaching Standards. In this standard, it explains that teachers should be “reflective practitioners” and “adapt practice to meet their needs.” By reflecting on what I saw in the classroom, I am starting to create a system of reflective practice even before I am teaching the content. When I teach, I will look into all of these topics to critique and adjust my teaching each day.
This artifact will help me a lot in my future. It helped me give academic purpose to me going to my fieldwork as it relates to classroom management. From the assignment, I was able to reinforce what I learned in class about being a proactive teacher, the zones of regulation, SOPs, interactive modeling, and more. I saw my teacher being proactive in helping prevent triggering the students through having a peace place, keeping students in their ZPD, teaching social emotional learning, and so much more that I will be sure to incorporate in my student teaching and future classroom. Each day, my teacher checked in at least once on the zone that the students were in so that she was able to help teach them to self regulate and help them understand and name their emotions. I hope to also incorporate this just as much into my classroom as her. Overall, in my classroom, being able to do the fieldwork assignments have helped me grow as a student and future teacher through having a reflective stance on what good classroom management looks like and applying my class knowledge of classroom management to it!
