From my brainstorming, I decided that I agree more with Zander than Southan. Art has effected me in positive ways. Also things such as art therapy and art being an outlet to people are things that I have witnessed first hand. To some people doodles may be a waste of time, but to me it is a way that I can unwind and sort out my thoughts. In terms of music, I think the video showed it’s importance perfectly. When the speaker explained the time that the boy was able to express his feelings after listening to the song, it showed that music can effect individuals very well. Without hearing this music, witnessing this art, the boy would have been left stressing his emotions. Even though this did not touch millions of people at one time, the performers are able to help individuals through the struggles of their lives. I think I am going to use this stance on the essay and use Southan’s ideas to refute my thesis. I think that the brainstorming allowed me to understand how to make the connections in the writing that I did not see before.

    Emily,

I’m happy this exercise helped! I think your example of doodles is especially applicable to this conversation. People use to see doodles as a complete and silly waste of good ink–but now, science continues to tell us about the (increasingly proven) benefits of doodling! In fact, just this week, my husband sent me this fun read:

    It’s worth checking out!

    Keep up the good work!

Thank you for sharing the article! I just read it and loved the part when it talked about airplanes. I think it is so interesting how random things such as drawing can help us learn things and remember information!!
