Final Assignment Artifact Number 1: Foundations of Literacy:
Artifact Number 1: Language Reading Timeline
Standard #1: “Learner Development: The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.”
What is it?
In this assignment, we created a timeline of language acquisition for a group of students that we chose. I chose english language learners as my group of students and outlined the five stages of language acquisition that they experience in my project.
Why did I choose this artifact and how does it demonstrate my learning?
I found this assignment very interesting because it showed me the different rate and ways that children acquire a second language and how teachers can best support them. Last year, I was in a class with a girl who just moved to America and did not speak english and ever since then, this topic has been of special interest to me. I also have a friend who is a highschool ELL teacher and hearing different things that she has talked about relating to her job has been really interesting to me as well. This project was cool to me because I was able to understand the ways that students learn the new language while in the classroom and understand the ways to best support them through the process. This artifact is most tied to standard number one. Standard number one is about learner development. This assignment relates directly to this because it shows a specific group of students- english language learners- and explains in a timeline the expected growth in language skills they will have. The understanding of the development of language for English Language Learning students is important in my future classroom because it showed me the importance of patience and working with the student at their pace through their learning.
